Water Blasting Cost Tauranga: Driveway, Concrete and Exterior Cleaning Prices

Water Blasting Cost Tauranga: Driveway, Concrete and Exterior Cleaning Prices

Water blasting in Tauranga costs from $3 per square metre plus GST. That rate covers driveways, concrete paths, patios, paving and other suitable hard surfaces. What you pay depends on how many square metres you have, what has stained the surface, and how easily equipment can reach it. Not every surface can be blasted, and some stains will not fully come out.

This guide covers the rates, what each surface costs, what adds to the quote, and what results to expect.

What water blasting costs in Tauranga

Sun SoftWash charges from $3 per square metre for water blasting, plus GST. The table below shows what that works out to at common sizes.

AreaCost + GSTCost incl. GST
50 m²$150$172.50
70 m²$210$241.50
100 m²$300$345
150 m²$450$517.50

Smaller areas are priced as a minimum job rather than strictly by the square metre. Setup, travel and pack-down take the same time whatever the size of the surface, so the rate applies once an area is big enough to carry that callout.

The rate covers labour, equipment and the cleaning itself, on surfaces suitable for water blasting. Heavy staining, stain-specific treatment and difficult access are quoted on top. Treat these figures as guide pricing: the firm price is confirmed once the surface has been assessed.

The minimum charge, and why small jobs cost what they do

A single path or a small patio is not priced at three dollars a square metre. That is not a markup, it is the cost of getting a crew and equipment to your property.

Travel, setup, hoses, protecting planting and packing down take the same time on a 15 square metre path as on a large driveway. On a small area, that work takes longer than the cleaning itself, so the rate stops being a fair way to price it.

Once a surface is large enough that the cleaning is the bulk of the visit, the square-metre rate takes over.

If you have only a small area, the best value is to add other work to the same visit. A driveway, paths and a patio cleaned together share one setup and one callout.

What each surface costs

The square-metre rate applies to surfaces in sound condition. Beyond that, the surface type changes what the job involves.

Concrete driveways and paths. Plain concrete in good order is the most straightforward work and sits at the standard rate. This is where most Tauranga jobs start.

Patios and courtyards. The same rate, with the final figure set by condition and access. An empty patio is quicker than a full one.

Pavers. The standard rate is a starting point, not a quote. Loose joints, weeds and surface coatings all change the work. One thing to know before you book: pressure can disturb the jointing sand between pavers, and re-sanding is not included in a standard clean unless it is written into the quote.

Exposed aggregate. More porous than plain concrete, so it holds staining longer and needs lower pressure to protect the stones. Quoted after assessment.

Sealed concrete. Depends entirely on the condition and bond of the sealer. A failing sealer washes away under pressure and takes the finish with it.

Decks and fences. Not priced on this rate at all. Timber usually should not be blasted, which the next section covers.

Surfaces that need assessment, and the ones we won’t blast

Water blasting is the right method for some surfaces and the wrong one for others. That distinction matters more than the price.

Straightforward. Plain concrete in sound condition, patios, paths and commercial concrete in good order. These are cleaned at the standard rate.

Assessed first. Sealed concrete, exposed aggregate, pavers, older concrete and anything with an existing coating. Each is checked for condition and bond before pressure is set, then priced once that is known.

Assessed, and usually a different method. Asphalt. Older, patched, cracked or loose asphalt can be damaged by high pressure, so it gets looked at rather than assumed.

May be declined. Cracked, spalling, weak or dusty concrete, and slabs with a failing sealer. Blasting these makes existing damage worse. Cleaning is not the answer for a surface that needs repair.

Timber decks and fences. High pressure furs the grain, opens the surface and drives out natural oils, leaving timber dry and grey. Decks are cleaned at low pressure with a suitable solution instead.

The rule we work to is simple. Pressure is matched to the surface, never set to maximum.

What adds to the quote

The rate covers a standard clean of a suitable surface. These are the things that take longer.

Access and layout. Narrow side access, steep sections, or a spot where equipment cannot be positioned properly all slow the job.

Size and shape. One large open slab is quicker per square metre than the same total area split across several awkward sections, because each section means repositioning.

Organic growth. Moss and algae are pre-treated to break down the growth before any pressure work starts. That step needs dwell time, which is why a green surface costs more than a dusty one.

Oil and rust. Fresh oil needs a degreaser. Rust needs stain-specific treatment rather than water pressure. Neither is a simple rinse, and both need identifying before the quote is set.

Runoff. Sites with oil contamination, or commercial areas, may need wastewater containment. That is extra setup time on the day.

Bundling. Adding water blasting to house washing, gutter cleaning or another service in the same visit spreads one callout across several jobs. Tauranga properties with a driveway, paths and a patio are exactly the shape of job that suits one combined visit.

What actually comes out

Not every mark disappears. Results depend on the stain, how long it has been there, and how porous the concrete is. Here is the honest picture.

StainWhat to expect
Dirt and surface grimeUsually a strong, even improvement
Algae and mossRespond well to pre-treatment before cleaning
Tyre marksOften improve significantly
Fresh oilNeeds degreasing; complete removal cannot be guaranteed
Old or absorbed oilMay stay visible. Concrete absorbs oil quickly
RustNeeds specialist treatment. Results vary with depth
Clay or soil stainingUsually improves. Deep porous staining may stay partly visible
Paint or coatingStandard water blasting is not typically effective

Marks that lift easily are usually just surface dirt. Marks that have soaked in are a different problem, and no amount of pressure changes that. The goal is a strong, honest improvement, with a clear picture of anything that will not fully clear before we start.

What Tauranga’s coastal conditions mean for cost

Salt and sea air change how quickly Tauranga surfaces deteriorate and how often they need cleaning.

Coastal properties build up grime faster. Salt deposits hold moisture against the surface, and that damp film is what algae and lichen settle into. Homes at Mount Maunganui and Papamoa face the most of it, being closest to open sea.

Humidity does the rest. Tauranga’s air stays damp for much of the year, so surfaces dry slowly and organic growth re-establishes quickly after cleaning. That is the main reason treatment matters more here than pressure alone. A blast lifts what is growing on the surface; it does not stop the next lot taking hold.

Further inland, suburbs with heavier tree cover collect more leaf litter and organic debris, which stains concrete and feeds growth in shaded areas.

The practical result is that coastal and shaded Tauranga properties sit toward the upper end of their size range, and need cleaning more often than a dry, exposed section would.

Commercial, shared accessways and rentals

Residential rates do not carry across to commercial work, and it is worth knowing why before you request a quote.

Smaller, straightforward commercial concrete areas can be priced from the standard rate as a starting guide. Larger areas, car parks, loading zones and sites with heavy oil or traffic staining are quoted after a site assessment. Access, contamination, scheduling and any wastewater requirements all get factored in. A car park is a different job from a driveway, and guessing a figure from a photo usually costs someone money.

Shared accessways between properties are quoted on area and condition, since these are assessed rather than priced off a standard rate.

Rental and holiday-home properties around Tauranga and Mount Maunganui are a common job for us. Hard-surface cleaning between tenancies, or before the summer season, suits a single combined visit while the property is empty. It is easier to schedule around tenants and costs less than booking each area separately.

Getting an accurate Tauranga quote

Have a few details ready and you will get a realistic number rather than a guess.

What to tell us. The approximate area, in square metres if you know it. The surface type: concrete, paving, aggregate or something else. What the marks are, whether that is grime, moss, oil or rust. Anything blocking access, like a narrow side path or a steep section. How long since the area was last cleaned.

What to check on any quote. Whether GST is included. Whether pre-treatment for moss and algae is in the scope or charged on top. For pavers, whether re-sanding is included. Whether runoff and any wastewater are handled. And whether the price is fixed or a “from” figure.

When a photo or a visit helps. Exposed aggregate, sealed or coated concrete, cracked slabs, and anything the crew cannot see clearly from the street. Photos are usually enough for a standard driveway. Commercial jobs and unusual surfaces are assessed on site, which protects you from a guess being wrong in either direction.

Water blasting cost Tauranga: quick answers

How much does water blasting cost in Tauranga?

From $3 per square metre plus GST, so a 100 square metre driveway works out to about $300 plus GST. The final figure depends on the surface and its condition.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes. Small areas are priced as a minimum job rather than by the square metre, because setup and travel take the same time whatever the size of the surface.

Will water blasting damage my concrete?

Not when the pressure matches the surface. Damage happens when one setting is used on everything, or when a slab that is already cracked or failing gets blasted instead of repaired.

Can you remove oil and rust stains?

Fresh oil can usually be lifted with a degreaser. Rust needs stain-specific treatment, and results vary with how deep it has set in. Both are handled as extra work, not a standard rinse.

Do you blast decks and fences?

No. Timber is cleaned at low pressure with a suitable solution, because high pressure furs the grain and strips the natural oils.

Do you clean commercial car parks?

Yes. Larger areas and sites with oil contamination are quoted after a site assessment.
